A rental flat is supposed to make life easier, right? Buy a property, find a tenant, collect monthly rent, and enjoy “passive income”. That is the dream many people grow up hearing about. But what if that same flat starts bringing electricity bill fights, tenant drama, and daily stress instead of peace of mind?

A Mumbai landlord’s viral social media post has now sparked exactly that conversation online. The man claimed that buying a flat worth around Rs 80 lakh ended up becoming mentally exhausting, as managing tenants slowly started feeling less like an investment and more like a full-time job.

He wrote, “I have a flat in Mira Road which is on rent. Today the electricity office called me and said they may cut the meter because the tenant has not paid the electricity bill on time. The bill is around Rs 7000.”

What seemed like a simple payment issue soon turned into a larger argument. The tenant reportedly questioned the electricity meter itself and claimed the bill was unusually high.

The user then compared rental income with market-linked investments such as mutual funds and stocks. According to him, investing the same amount elsewhere may have saved him from the emotional pressure that comes with managing tenants and housing society issues.

He expressed, “No tenant drama. No electricity arguments. No maintenance stress. No society headaches. People talk a lot about return on investment. Very few people talk about return on mental peace.”

Stop glorifying rental income as passive income.

In today’s time, if you invest ₹80 lakhs into a flat in Mumbai and give that flat on rent, there is a high chance you will lose your mental peace. Same thing is happening with me right now. I have a flat in Mira Road which is…
