Pinterest Meets E-Commerce: How Technology Is Making Every Image Shoppable

Window shopping used to need a pavement, a shop window and ideally some drizzle, with Bridget Jones-style romantic delusions thrown in for good measure. Nowadays, a photo on a phone does most of the same job and has started letting people step straight through the glass. Spot something you like in a picture, tap it and a list of shops selling the same thing (or something close) appears. It’s a lot less effort than squinting at the screen and typing a vague description into a search bar in the hope that it works.

Getting from a pretty picture to an actual product listing involves several steps.businesses with an approved Instagram Shop and product catalogue can tag items in eligible posts, allowing people to tap a product label and visit the retailer’s online shop. Businesses can also work with creators to feature products in sponsored content, although product tagging remains subject to Instagram’s shopping requirements.

According to Google, Lens was handling nearly 20 billion visual searches a month in October 2024, with 20% of them shopping-related. Google has since taken visual shopping further through AI Mode in Search as its September 2025 update introduced what it calls “visual search fan-out”, whichanalyses details and secondary objects in an image alongside the main subject, then runs several searches in the background. Google also said its Shopping Graph contained more than 50 billion product listings at the time, helping connect searches with products from retailers around the world.

Why Shops Want To Be Spotted In The Background

A retailer no longer has to wait for someone to search for a specific product before getting noticed. Google’s Shopping Graph brings together listings from major retailers and local shops, complete with prices, reviews, colour options and availability. A shopper looking for a particular style of chair, for example, might come across a smaller retailer they wouldn’t have found through a traditional search.

Pinterest has built shopping into the discovery process itself. According to its help pages, Product Pins can display pricing and availability, while users can select objects in certain Pins to find similar products through merchants’ websites. A picture can therefore lead directly to a product listing rather than just becoming another addition to someone’s mood board.

An outfit or interior design post can do way more than inspire someone’s next purchase. Product tags can direct followers straight to the items being featured. That turns a photograph from something a brand pays to produce into something that can sit directly on the route to a sale.

When The Sofa Is Similar But Not The Sofa

Even Pinterest’svisual search isn’t guaranteed to find the exact item in a photo, often suggesting similar products instead. Its visual search features aren’t available on adverts or collage Pins either. The May 2025 update was initially limited to women’s fashion in three countries, so the experience wasn’t immediately available to everyone.

Google’s AI Mode visual search update also launched in English in the US first, making location another factor in which features people can access. There’s also the question of who gets the top spot. Google announced in October 2024 that Shopping ads would appear above and alongside Lens visual search results; that means some products appearing in a shopping search may be sponsored rather than selected purely because they’re the closest visual match.

Where Shopping Starts When Nobody Types Anything

Search boxes have always asked people to put what they want into words and a lot of what people want (a mood, a shade or the exact curve of an armchair) never quite turns into words. Pictures get around that, which is why tools that read them keep turning up from so many directions at once.

Not every image is ready to become a shop window just yet – platforms still need to recognise what’s in a picture, retailers need their products listed and sponsored placements can influence what appears first. A tapped item might lead to the exact jacket someone wanted or a near-enough alternative, which is roughly how people have always treated a shop assistant who says, “We’ve got something very similar in the back”.
