When a paycheck stops, a portfolio has to take over, and the right four stocks can do exactly that. Here is what $200,000 spread across ultra-high-yield names actually sends home every quarter and whether those payments are safe enough to…

When paychecks stop, a portfolio takes on a new job. For anyone near or in retirement and holding a lump sum, the question changes from how fast the money can grow to how much cash it can reliably send home every quarter, and how secure that cash is.

High-yield dividend stocks give that question a concrete answer. Here’s how much annual income a $50,000 position in each of the four high-yield names would produce. That is $200,000 invested in total, producing more than $15,000 a year in passive income. All four yield more than 6%, putting them in ultra-high-yield territory. Dividend safety comes first in each profile below.

    Enterprise Products Partners

    • Stock #4: Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD | EPD Price Prediction)
    • Yield (forward): 6.06%
    • Shares for $50,000: 1,352.08
    • Annual Passive Income: ~$3,028.66

Enterprise runs one of North America’s largest midstream networks, with NGL, crude, natural gas and petrochemical pipelines plus a major Gulf Coast export presence. In the second quarter, it moved a record 14.7 million barrels a day of oil equivalent. As a master limited partnership (MLP), it passes most of its cash flow through to unitholders, and that pass-through structure keeps the yield high.

Of the four, Enterprise has the best coverage. Operational distributable cash flow of $2.3 billion covered the distribution 1.9x. Quarterly payments go back to 1999, and the current $0.56 is up 2.8% from a year ago. The main risk is spending: 2026 growth capex is expected at $2.9 to $3.4 billion. MLP units can generate unrelated business taxable income (UBTI), which IRA holders need to keep in mind.

    Verizon

    • Stock #3: Verizon (NYSE: VZ)
    • Yield (forward): 6.35%
    • Shares for $50,000: 1,122.59
    • Annual Passive Income: ~$3,176.92

Verizon is the largest U.S. wireless carrier. It added fiber scale when it closed the Frontier acquisition in January 2026. The yield is high because a mature, capital-heavy business carrying a large debt load trades at about 9 times forward earnings.

Full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $4.99 to $5.04 sits well above the $2.83 annual dividend, for a payout ratio near 57%. Second-quarter free cash flow came in at $6.43 billion. Management calls the dividend “ironclad” and has raised it for the 20th consecutive year. The risk is debt: total unsecured debt stands at $136.5 billion. Investors are also waiting on the company’s upcoming earnings report.

    • Stock #2: MPLX (NYSE: MPLX)
    • Yield (forward): 7.37%
    • Shares for $50,000: 856.31
    • Annual Passive Income: ~$3,687.28

MPLX runs pipelines, gathering, processing, fractionation and marine terminals, mostly in the Permian and Marcellus basins, and Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC) holds a majority share. Like Enterprise, it is an MLP that pays out most of its cash, so the same UBTI consideration applies to IRA holders.

Distributable cash flow reached $1.45 billion in the second quarter, and management is seeking coverage of 1.3 times “for both 26 and 27 and frankly beyond.” The quarterly payout has grown from $0.85 in 2024 to $1.0765, and management expects 12.5% growth again in 2026 and 2027. Leverage of 3.7x sits below the 4.0x target. The specific risk is execution, because 2026 growth capex was raised to $2.9 billion.

    Ares Capital

    • Stock #1: Ares Capital (NASDAQ: ARCC)
    • Distribution Rate (forward): 10.37%
    • Shares for $50,000: 2,701.24
    • Annual Passive Income: ~$5,186.39

The largest publicly traded business development company (BDC) is Ares Capital. It makes mostly first-lien, seni loans to middle-market companies, with 619 companies in a portfolio worth $29.35 billion. BDCs are required to pays out 90% of their taxable income, and that requirement drives the rate.

Coverage is tight. Core EPS of $0.47 came in a penny short of the $0.48 quarterly dividend. Management says core earnings have topped the dividend over the past 12 months, and excess income of $1.38 per share adds a cushion. Ares has paid stable or growing dividends for 17 consecutive years. Part of the high rate comes from a lower share price: at $18.51, the stock trades below its NAV of $19.35. The risk is credit quality, since non-accruals rose to 2.4% from 1.8%.

For an income investor, this group pairs two well-covered pipeline operators and a telecom generating billions in quarterly free cash flow against one higher-paying lender whose coverage is thinner. All four pay quarterly, so the income comes in regular installments over the year instead of one lump sum.
