When retirement paychecks stop, a portfolio has to cover the bills without forcing you to sell shares at the worst possible moment. Three regulated electric utilities offer a quieter solution, though one of them carries a wildfire liability that keeps…

Retirement changes where your money comes from. For decades, a paycheck covered the bills. After the last one, every expense has to come from savings, Social Security, or cash the portfolio pays out on its own. Selling shares to pay for groceries works fine until a market drop forces you to sell at low prices. Passive Income: ~$3,244.40

Southern owns Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Mississippi Power, Southern Power, and Southern Company Gas, and it serves about 9.04 million regulated customers. The yield comes from the regulated model. Regulators cap returns on the rate base, so profits are steady and a large share goes to shareholders. The quarterly dividend rose to $0.76 from $0.74 in 2026.

The $3.04 annualized payout equals about 67% of the midpoint of 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $4.50 to $4.60. Management expects to finish near or at the top of that range. Future raises depend on large-load agreements under contract, which exceed 17 GW by the mid-2030s. The biggest concern is that higher debt levels are pushing up interest expense, and new share sales are diluting existing holders while the build-out gets funded.

Duke Energy: Two Decades of Raises Plus a Huge Capital Plan

    • Stock #2: Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK)
    • Yield: 3.41%
    • Shares for $100,000: 784.87
    • Annual Passive Income: ~$3,406.33

Duke serves about 8.73 million retail electric customers in the Carolinas, Florida, Ohio, and Indiana, and it also owns Piedmont Natural Gas. The same regulated structure supports its yield. The CFO said on the August 4, 2026 call that the July raise marked “over 20 years of consecutive annual dividend increases.”

The $4.34 annualized dividend equals about 65% of the midpoint of 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $6.55 to $6.80. Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.43 beat the $1.31 consensus. Growth rests on 7.8 gigawatts of signed data center agreements and a long-term EPS growth target of 5% to 7% through 2030. The pace of spending is the key concern. Duke is deploying “more than $1 billion per month,” and its FFO-to-debt target of 14.5% leaves little room if new demand comes late.

Edison International: Biggest Yield, Biggest Wildfire Risk

    • Stock #1: Edison International (NYSE:EIX)
    • Yield: 5.98%
    • Shares for $100,000: 1,702.71
    • Annual Passive Income: ~$5,976.50

Edison is the parent of Southern California Edison (SCE). Its yield stands out for a reason specific to the company: the stock dropped about 23% earlier in 2026 over wildfire liability, while the dividend stayed at $0.8775 per quarter. Over the past 52 weeks, shares have traded between $50.27 and $80.30.

The $3.51 annualized payout equals about 58% of the midpoint of 2026 core EPS guidance of $5.90 to $6.20. Q3 core EPS of $1.92 beat the $1.81 consensus. The company’s dividend policy targets “a payout ratio of 45% to 55% of SCE core earnings,” and it has delivered 22 consecutive years of increases. Future raises depend on rate base growth of about 7% through 2030.

Risk here is concentrated in one place. Los Angeles County Fire Department reports found that SCE equipment caused the Eaton Fire, and California’s legislative session ended without wildfire liability reform. Management warned that falling below investment grade “would add further costs.”

What Roughly $1,052 a Month Looks Like in Retirement

Combined, these 3 positions generate $12,627.23 in annual passive income on a $300,000 investment, a blended yield of 4.21%. Edison International contributes $5,976.50, Duke Energy adds $3,406.33, and Southern Company rounds out the group with $3,244.40.

For a retiree, that comes to about $1,052.27 a month. Edison supplies nearly half of it, so a wildfire-driven cut there would hit the total hardest. Slower data center growth could also shrink future raises at Duke and Southern. Steady quarterly checks that grow each year can keep up with rising living costs without selling a single share (the whole point of a dividend ladder, which we laid out step by step in a free guide here), and that predictable cash flow matters most once the paychecks stop.
