If you’ve been knocked back for a loan or a mortgage in Australia, the reason is usually sitting on your credit file. The good news is that not everything on that file is set in stone. Some of it can be challenged, and some of it you can fix yourself without paying a cent. This guide walks through what lands on your file, what you can correct for free, when a listing can be challenged, and when a paid specialist is actually worth the money.

What’s on your Australian credit file?

Three reporting bodies hold credit information in Australia: Equifax, Experian and illion. Lenders don’t all use the same one, so a listing that hurts your application at one bank might not even show at another. Your file can carry several types of entry:

    • Defaults: an overdue debt of at least $150 that’s more than 60 days late, once the provider has followed the notice rules.
    • Court default judgments: a court decision recorded against you for an unpaid debt.
    • Credit enquiries: every credit application you make, whether it was approved or not.
    • Repayment history: up to two years of monthly markers showing whether each payment arrived on time.
    • Identity-theft entries: accounts or defaults opened by someone else using your name.

Defaults and court judgments generally stay for five years, while repayment history rolls off after two. A missed payment still counts against you on paper, so it helps to know exactly what a lender is looking at.

Do you already know why you’re being rejected?

Before you spend anything, get your file. You’re entitled to a free copy from each of the three bodies, and you can usually request one every three months. Read all three, because they won’t match. Look for the obvious problems first: a default you cleared years ago that’s still marked as unpaid, or a debt that was never yours in the first place. Errors are more common than people expect, and you can only dispute what you can actually see.

Can you fix a mistake yourself, for free?

Yes, and you should try this first. If a listing is simply wrong, you don’t need to pay anyone to have it corrected. Here’s the process:

    1. Contact the reporting body, or the provider that lodged the listing, and tell them exactly what’s incorrect. 2. Send your evidence: a receipt, a settlement letter, a bank statement, whatever proves your case. 3. Wait for the outcome. They generally have 30 days to investigate and respond. 4. If they refuse and you still believe you’re right, take it to the Australian realistic. A correct listing for a debt you genuinely missed is very hard to remove, and any service promising to wipe accurate history is not credible. What can be challenged is a listing with a flaw in it: the provider skipped a required notice, the amount recorded is wrong, the default was lodged too early, the debt was paid before it was listed, or the entry is the result of identity theft. Those are grounds for a formal dispute. A clean, accurate default usually is not.

When to use a specialist credit repair service in Australia

Some disputes are straightforward enough to handle yourself. Others involve a provider that won’t budge, or a court judgment that has to be set aside before a listing comes off. That’s where paying a specialist can be worth it.

An Australian credit repair service reviews your files from the three reporting bodies, Equifax, Experian and illion, then identifies negative entries that can be contested, such as defaults, court default judgments, incorrect credit enquiries, repayment-history marks and listings left by identity theft. Where there are genuine grounds, it disputes the entry with the credit provider or reporting body on your behalf. In Australia,
